"You know, one day, it will happen to you. And when love finds you I will want to kiss cupid," Lily declared as she walked into our home room, still dragging me along by my sleeve.
"I bet you would," I replied as I took my seat. I have sat in the same seat for the past three years, but I didn't mind; I still wasn't used to change. The first day I went to school had been hectic.
"So, do you have any idea what you are going to do in IPP today?" Lily asked as she sat on the table.
I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know, probably try to re-design some book covers, maybe design a few of my own."
Lily nodded her head and looked behind me; her eyes widened with shock.
"What?" I whispered.
"Matthew is in our home room"
I blinked, shocked. I knew the terms changed, but our home room never had, or maybe I hadn't noticed.
"Hello Lily, Julia," a voice from behind me greeted us.
I spun around to look at Matthew. As far as I knew he had never started a conversation with anyone; other people always started conversations with him.
"Hello, Matthew, how are you today?" I asked in replied, it was my usual response when talking to new people. Emma had drilled it into me.
Matthew's expression didn't change; his face was as blank as mine used to be. It almost seemed like his emotions were lost from him. It seemed like he couldn't feel anything, like the world was as barren as mine used to be.
"I'm fine I suppose, nothing to really excite the mind," he replied in a monotone.
He sounded like nothing mattered to him, nothing bothered him. He had a cool air around him that most people thought was mysterious. I knew it was a lack of emotion.
"But, today is the day that you get to change seats!" Lily said excitedly, totally missing the tone of his voice.
I was surprised he hadn't gotten annoyed with people that didn't truly listening to him. It must happen everywhere he went; no one could see that he truly didn't care – about anything. He had nothing he held dear because nothing excited him. Maybe that was why all of the girls fantasised about him they wanted to change the expression on his face. I was used to it; I saw it on my face for 12 years  – staring back at me from the mirror.
"Is that today?" He asked, looking around the room.
All of the girls that had been watching us turned away in that moment. They had been staring at Matthew and glaring at Lily and me. I took a greater interest in the looks that crossed their faces and I saw that they were more worried about me then Lily.
How interesting, I thought, I'm considered to be the bigger threat. I wonder why that is? I'm as boring as watching paint dry, as Kristen likes to remind me. I don't hold any interest to anyone. Maybe something is happening that I don't get. I have to ask Kristen tomorrow if that's possible…
"Julia Reasons!" The teacher called, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Here," I answered.
I turned to look at Lily. She seemed to be struggling to contain her excitement about getting to talk to Matthew. I glanced behind me to see that he was looking out the window, his eyes as blank as his face, nothing about him had changed. An emotion I still didn't fully understand filled me. Annoyance – that was what Emma had called it once I explained it to her. But, why was I feeling this way? Maybe it was because I was too used to reading peoples true thoughts from their face.
I turned back to the front to listen to the teacher read out the morning notices. I don't know how many people actually listen to them. I imagine most of the guys do, as for the girls, I would say it's about ninety percent not listening, ten percent listening. I was part of the ten percent that listened, but, there was nothing interesting anyway. I knew Lily would ask me about the notices as soon as we walked out the door. Of course, I was right.
"Did I miss anything interesting?" Lily asked as we walked out of homeroom.
She asked the same question every day. You would think I would just stop telling her what the notices were about, but, I guess that would be cruel of me. She was one of my only friends after all.
"So, what did you talk about with Matthew?" I asked as I headed towards IPP.
"He asked me if I was in his IPP class this term," Lily said, a slight hop in her step, "He looked disappointed when I said I wasn't," she paused, "But I told him you were and he smiled!"
Everyone that heard Lily's words stopped and stared at me. Matthew had never smiled, not once. He didn't even smile in pictures. Matthew didn't smile, but, apparently, he smiled because I was in his class. I was now a dead woman.
"You're lying," the nearest girl said, looking at Lily like she was crazy.
