PROLOGUE

White walls are always around me. Everywhere I look I see that boring colour, I know of no other colour, white is all I see. I don't know how old I am, I don't even know what I am; all I know are the walls around me. Wait, I forgot, I know the reason I am here; it's the only other thing I know.
"So you've awakened for the day," a voice said over a microphone.
This was a voice I hadn't heard before. I didn't know what was outside of my room. I only knew of the voice that asked me questions and told me where to go. I am here because of my birth mark; I know exactly what it means, how it works, what it does. This is what the voice is trying to find out. I won't tell them, I act ignorant of what they want from me, but I know.
My wings, they want to take my wings from me.
I have always had the birthmark, these wings, on my right hip. The voice found me when I was smaller and put me in this room. Or so I've been told.
"Yes, I am awake," I replied looking at the ceiling.
I saw no reason to move from my bed, since I had nothing else to do. I could speak, read what was written in my room, but I could not write. Not once had they given me that pleasure, but, then, I wouldn't know what to write, nothing catches my attention. Everything is white, I know of no other colour.
"Do you have any new information to share with us?" The voice asked.
It was a voice similar to my own, soft, calm, and soothing. The other voice is rougher, I don't like that voice. That voice gets hard and angry when I can't answer any of the questions.
"You asked me this question yesterday," I replied, not moving from my spot. I didn't blink, didn't twitch, I didn't do anything, "I haven't left my room for a long time. How could I tell you anything?"
Then, I moved, I turned to look at the window. I turned to the only feature in my white world. I know there was something beyond it; I accidentally bumped into it one day and found it wasn't as hard as the rest of the wall. Looking into this window, I could see something staring back at me. I had asked what it was and they told me that it was my reflection. I asked them about my eyes. They were a colour I'd never seen. They told me they were a colour called gold.
"That is a fair point, but still. You haven't done anything for the past few days. We thought that you might have discovered something." The voice was trying to get me to tell it something. It happened every time.
"Nope, I just can't think of anything to do. I have stopped moving to save my energy," I explained, turning my head back towards the ceiling.
"What if I told you that you could leave this place if you tell us something?" The voice bargained.
I looked back towards the window; never had they mentioned a place outside of this one. I didn't even know that an outside world existed.
"All I know is that these wings are destined for one person and one person alone," I said.
That was the first and last piece of information that they were going to get out of me. No one could touch my birthmark, only me. I knew my parents could, but I didn't even know what or where they were. This was the only thing I could tell to the voice. It was the only thing that didn't give anything away.
"Do you know who this one person is?" the voice asked, intrigued.
At this I jumped out of my bed and stood in front of the window. My reflection's golden eyes held an emotion that I didn't understand, but I let it flow through me. I needed change, I was too used to this horrible white.
"AS IF I WOULD KNOW! I'VE BEEN LOCKED IN HERE FOR I-DON'T-KNOW-HOW- LONG!" I yelled.
I smashed my hand against the window and I could see a small line form in it. I had never touched the window with so much force and it seemed to break easily. Before I got the chance to hit it again, a part of my white wall vanished. I sprinted back to my bed and hid under the blankets. No one had ever come into my room before. I peeked out from under my covers, and saw someone who looked totally different from me walk in. I looked behind them and was glad to see that they were the only person to enter.
"Where are you child?" The person asked gently. It was the same voice that had come from the microphone.
I didn't move, waiting for them to notice me. I had never seen anyone who looked like me. I was petrified of what it could mean.
"Don't worry, child, I am not going to hurt you. I'm like you, I'm human and female. You're also female," she walked over to the bed and sat down near me. I didn't move, I didn't blink, listening to what she was telling me.
"We will be sending you to a school, a place where lots of people around your age go to learn. They learn about the world and they learn things that will help them in the future." She had a small smile on her face as she described this place.
I still didn't move, but the thought of seeing more than just myself and white walls was extremely appealing. I blinked, showing that I was listening to what she was saying.
"Now, I understand that you know nothing about the outside world. Heck, you can barely read and write!" She shook her head and gently placed her hand on my back.
"I will come in everyday to teach you about the world. I will bring you up to speed so that you won't be too badly picked on by the other students." She gently stroked my cheek with her hand. Her hand was the softest thing that I had ever felt. Nothing compared to it, and I don't think anything ever would.
